Blake Abernethy

Timothy Blake Abernethy, 24, died Sunday, July 4, 2004. We remember him with love on the anniversary of his passing. The following was written by the family for the local newspaper.

Blake was born June 14, 1980, in Myrtle Beach, SC. A brilliant thread of humor ran through his various roles as son, brother, grandson, friend, nephew, cousin, construction worker, and interior painter. Blake’s virtuoso impersonations routinely deflated people who took themselves too seriously. His brother, Jacob, will miss having his idiosyncrasies mirrored back with equal measures of devastating accuracy and reassuring love. Over the past five years, thousands of hours of guitar practice had advanced Blake from a hack strummer to an astonishing soloist. Strange, beautiful, blues-classical-raga-influenced cadenzas became the soundtrack accompanying most visits from Blake. Of course there were occasions-for instance, when watching a rented movie-when one would actually have to ask Blake to put the guitar aside!

Perhaps most admirable about Blake was his self-possession, his blithe unconcern for the opinions people had of him. Unlike those who navigate their lives with a compass calibrated to social conventions, Blake always determined his own ”true north.” Though he kept a dignified silence about his inner life, Blake demonstrated a longing to experience God’s immediate presence in his life. To this end, he made three spiritual pilgrimages to India, where he spent time among the close disciples of Meher Baba striving to help clarify his place in the universe. His family and friends pray that he has now found that place.

He is survived by his parents, Gail and David Morris of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; his brothers, Jacob and Oliver Morris, both of N. Myrtle Beach, SC; his maternal aunts: Susan Field of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Pat Hart of Goldsboro, NC; and his maternal grandmother, Betty Roberts, with whom he shared such devotion and love.
