Chummy, Bobbi’s Beloved Cat
Bobbi Bernstein’s cat, Chummy (named after Baba’s dog), sadly had to be euthanized on April 14, 2014. Deaf and blind and walking in circles, bumping into things, he was crying a lot—it was time. Bobbi wrote:
The last days were so sweet. Chummy needed to be held a lot. He was very restless, but when I put him on the piano bench, he would listen to me playing songs. I mostly played soothing instrumentals for him … and the Chummy and Simba song.
I would like to say a few words about dear sweet Chummy. Aside from playing and listening to the piano, he very much loved to roam the neighborhood and sit outdoors alone or with the now late Simba and the neighbor cat, Spooky. He enjoyed the outdoors and somehow managed not to get into fights or hardly scratched in 17 years of going in and out of the cat door. He was friendly like his name, and only growled once that I noticed, when a dog visiting my home started licking my face. He was known to like lentils and rice, when flavored well, tofu and vegetables, and the sea vegetable nori. I think his taste in food was very unusual for a cat!
He has a song written about him and his brother Simba called “Chummy and Simba,” which has been heard by many many kids. I’ll miss him very much, but I am happy that a cat like the adventurous Chummy doesn’t have to endure blindness and deafness any longer. He is now free to fly!
